Just a glimpse.
Who we are.
Kent County Public Schools is Maryland's lone public school district with only one high school institution. Nevertheless, Kent County High School makes up what it lacks in population with an abundance of student and community activities. The Green School Initiative is one of these activities. From conducting recycling procedures to planting trees, students are in cooperation with school staff and community organizations and officials to achieve the ultimate goal of school-wide, "Greenhood."
Our Environment.
Located on Maryland's rural Eastern Shore, Kent County is situated on a peninsula, surrounded by the Sassafras River to the north, the Chester River to the south, and the Chesapeake Bay to the west. This location possess unique benefits and consequences alike.
- First, the location of the high school's campus is at the head of the county's watershed, meaning that water drains to each of these bay tributaries. With this being said, erosion is a great concern on the school grounds.
- Second, the lack of diverse plant species and varieties drains the school's property of natural vegetation found throughout the region. Since the environment sows the seeds for life, it is our responsibility to ensure care and prosperity. Through the planting of trees and flowers as well as the allocation of funds for its overall
improvement - it is the process of achieving a, "Green," status that means the most. Kent County's environment largely consists of farmlands, deciduous forests, and tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay. Issues such as pollution, erosion, and intrusion of wetlands are concerns that this project is attempting to resolve through hands on engagement and awareness of all students.

Our Mission.
Through this project, our intention is to not only create a more clean environment, but to also establish a genuine sense of guardianship over nature itself. By developing a schoolwide initiative with such goal in mind, it is our hope to transform student and faculty actions in order to better the atmosphere of the community at large.
Kent County's Top 5 Accomplishments
#1 - Treemendous Project - Habitat Restoration
- Stream Restoration Project- provides students with the educational opportunity to improve their surrounding ecosystem and lower the pollution output by planting over 2,500 trees and over 10,000 shrubs/flowers. We received a grant which allowed us to purchase these plants and students from various grades were able to be involved in the actual planting.
#2 - Envirothon Team - After many years without a team we finally have returned to compete!!!
Envirothon- students intensely study multiple environment related topics where they compete against other schools to test their knowledge. Our school takes multiple groups to the Envirothon practice day where they continue to learn about their specific topic and take practice tests in order to understand what the actual test will be like. Students learn how to properly take various samples and measurements of things in their environment and correctly interpret their results.

#3 - Recycling Project. Not just because we have to but because it matters and we can show you WHY. So we did! And we showed the community as well.
|
#4 - Environmental Education trips are the norm, not the exception.
|
#5 - Our Green Team. We aren't mean, but we keep it clean! Dedicated students who help track and monitor the school keep everyone on their toes!
- Student Monitoring- students consistently track the “green” actions of teachers and their classroom. By observing and then recording the amount of recycling, lights used/off, outlets being unplugged and various other aspects in order to “certify” that classroom as “green”, a class is awarded a green sticker weekly based on their performance. The idea is to encourage both teachers and students to go green and do their part in helping the environment.
